Hensel’s Seafood and Deli: Best Fish Tacos Ever

Update May 2015 – I am told they are in the process of relocating and are currently closed. Let me know if you hear anything else in the comments.

In the small coastal town of Crescent City sits one of the best fish taco places I have ever been to in my entire life. The spot itself is literally the size of a small motor home and it has three stools to eat at. To me this adds to the charm though as you are sitting there watching Hansel and his family cook the food right in front of your eyes.

The amazing part about this whole thing is that Hansel himself goes out and catches all the fish with a hook and a rod. He is a fisherman and loves to bring in the best fish for his food. I never even realized how much better the fish is when it is caught fresh like this and if you are in the area at lunch time you must go.

The Location

Hensels Seafood and Deli 11

Like I said above, this is a tiny spot. You will be a foot away from the hostess table while eating and only three people can sit inside at a time. If the weather is nice though there are two big picnic tables outside that you can sit at.

I enjoyed sitting inside as it gave me time to hang out with the family and talk about the food and the restaurant, it was also raining so it was nice to get out of the cold.

The Food

With only 6 months of being open, this spot is already the top place in Crescent City on Yelp and for good reason. It was a food lovers delight when I ate here.

I ordered the fish tacos and clam chowder to share with my wife. I watched the preparation right in front of my eyes and saw all the flavors being added to perfect the tacos. My wife and I both bit into the tacos and looked at each other speechless, it was that good. If I could have licked the plate I probably would have.

After finishing the tacos I wanted to try more so I ordered the fish sandwich. This came with a side of garlic pasta salad as well.

The fish sandwich had a tomato, fish, cheese and home-made tartar sauce on a toasted slice of bread. It was really good as well. I liked the tacos better but that is not to say this wasn’t great.

Lastly we took a small personal pie with us to try later. My wife is a huge fan of pumpkin pie and after she tried it I only had one bite before she finished it. Like the other food here is was great as well. I know it sounds like I am singing praises for this spot but honestly it was one of the best things I ate on my entire 3 day road trip. I know Crescent City is out of the way, but if you are driving through, going here is a no brainer.
